Senior Project Manager, Start Up and Commissioning

Swift Current Energy, a renewable energy developer, owner, and operator (the “Company”), is seeking an experienced Senior Project Manager to provide oversight of start-up and commissioning activities across the Company’s portfolio of solar, wind and battery storge projects. The Company has primary offices in Boston and Houston; this role may be based in one of these locations or may work remotely, with a willingness to travel, from anywhere within the continental U.S.

Job Scope:

The Senior Project Manager of Start Up and Commissioning works collaboratively with Project Execution and Construction, Asset Management, and other key stakeholders to support the successful startup and commissioning of the Company’s projects. This individual will provide strategic leadership and support in the areas of startup and commissioning for a rolling portfolio of projects; a key focus is on mitigating risk by proactively identifying, assessing, and addressing potential issues.

The Senior Project Manager will provide tactical leadership and strategic direction to ensure a smooth transition from the construction to the operational phase and confirm all operational requirements are met. Additionally, the Senior Project Manager will develop strategic programs and tools that provide direction for projects during construction through handoff to the Operations team. Additional responsibilities include the following:

  • Support the Pre-Construction team in developing and reviewing contractor requirements for start-up and commissioning. 
  • Present strategic leadership and direction for projects during construction through final handover to Operations and Asset Management.
  • Facilitate and manage key interconnection deliverables and testing to meet backfeed/COD timelines.
  • Support the Construction Department in the field by actively participating in project page-turns and testing reviews, as well as training and supporting inspection team members.
  • Facilitate and encourage the smooth integration of development, engineering, procurement, and construction execution functions for committed projects.
  • Provide tactical leadership during the startup and commissioning phase of projects.
  • Understand the implications of various technical options and guide engineering designs to achieve the best solution for each situation.
  • Provide leadership during project construction activities, ensuring safety, quality, schedule, cost, environmental, landowner, and other project requirements are met or exceeded.
  • Ensure the overall success of project execution by consistently implementing construction management tools for each assigned project.
  • Consolidate and analyze costs, forecasts, and utilization that impact the startup phase of a project.
  • Develop effective relationships with internal departments, contractors, utility stakeholders, regional transmission organizations, suppliers, landowners, and other stakeholders.
  • Provide strategic direction and tactical support to Construction Project Managers and Construction Site Managers.
  • Establish effective and supportive relationships with colleagues across functions and geographies.
  • Reinforce a team approach throughout the enterprise, both on projects and on internal initiatives.
  • Effectively and regularly communicate relevant information to senior management and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Champion change and effectively manage the implementation of innovative ideas/lessons learned.
  • Make effective decisions when presented with multiple options for how to progress the project. 
  • Serve as a main point of contact as it relates to start-up and commissioning for multiple projects. 
  • Perform regular quality control audits to maintain the expected standards. 
  • Create and implement programs to ensure projects successfully meet key interconnection and COD milestones.
  • Additional duties as required.

This role reports to the Executive Vice President of Pre-Construction and Construction. Job responsibilities may evolve based on Company needs and individual career growth.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related Technical field.
  • 10+ years’ experience in renewable energy or large-scale utility construction projects is preferred. Advanced knowledge of construction management and constructing methods for large projects, including knowledge of contract management, procurement, and supply chain management, environmental and building permitting, and transportation logistics.
  • Ability to interpret documents produced in AutoCAD, GIS, and other discipline-relevant software.
  • Advanced understanding of substation construction and equipment, from control house relays and communication equipment to transformers, circuit breakers, switches, and other yard equipment.
  • Experience with various SCADA systems and the communication channels that this equipment utilizes.
  • Experience with initial energization of MV (Medium Voltage) and HV (High Voltage) electrical systems, LOTO and OTOs.
  • Telecommunications and fiber physical layer experience a plus.
  • Experience working with various ISO and other grid entities.
  • Basic knowledge of applicable industry standards and codes, including Uniform Building Code (UBC), International Building Code (IBC), American Concrete Institute (ACI), American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC), Concrete Reinforcing Steel Institute (CRSI), National Fire Protection Association, (NFPA), and American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
  • Basic knowledge of land surveying methods and practices, aerial photography, and mapping (including UTM and NAD coordinate systems), and geospatial references.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft products (Word, Project, Excel), Bluebeam, GIS tools/software, AutoCAD, drawing interpretation and other discipline-relevant software.
  • Current authorization to live and work in the U.S.

Other:

  • The role is expected to require 25%+ time travel, or as required based on project or Company needs.
  • Ability to speak, read, and write English proficiently and deliver a variety of instructions furnished in written, verbal, diagram, or schedule form.
  • Ability to work in adverse weather conditions 25% of the time while on wind, solar, and battery storage sites.
  • Ability to understand and communicate safety precautions when necessary.
